Instead of a private room, the restaurant had dedicated two long tables facing the river for their party. While Shirley and Edward had to sit with the older and more staid members of the party, the four younger people were seated with half a dozen, high-spirited widows who were excited to have the celebrity chef at their table. Bob was in his element, at the center of conversation.

“Your kitchen.” A henna-haired older lady, Edward’s second cousin, opened the next topic. “We see these well-equipped kitchens that you have on the television sets. I've always wondered what a famous chef's real-life kitchen is like.”

“You know,” Stanley whispered in Paige's ear. “I've been putting off updating the kitchen in the main house. We should take notes.”

The word 'we' was a delicious upward push into the clouds. She hid her flushed face behind a glass of icy water.

“Right now, I'm an apartment dweller with limited space in New York City. But I'm hoping to buy a weekend place, either on Long Island or along the shore in Connecticut this coming year.”

Paige didn't miss the look that passed between Bob and Ryan; this wasn't the first time the topic had come up.

“And you’re right. The first thing before moving in would be upgrading the kitchen,” Bob turned his on-camera smile to his audience. “My way of thinking is that functionality doesn't have to rule out beauty. I like to spend time in my kitchen, so it has to be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, as well as a good working space.”

Stanley pulled in his chair to make room for a group of diners being seated at the table beside them.

“…several ovens and multiple refrigerators are a must for entertaining,” Bob was explaining. “Open shelving…”

“Paige? I can't believe it. Paige Coleman?”

The pit of her stomach tore open to reveal an all too familiar black hole. Paige looked over, her throat closing as she stared at two former classmates. And not just any two classmates. Liz and Jack. The two ringleaders of a certain prank involving a whaling ship, a class banner, and a video camera.

“Oh my God, you look great,” Liz said, staring at the way Stanley had his hand draped over the back of Paige's chair. The other members of their party were taking their seats too.

Jack plunked himself in the chair next to Liz, his drink sloshing on the table as he put it down. He glanced vaguely in their direction. “Spoilsport.”

Liz ignored him. “I didn't know you were going to be in town. We should get together.”

Paige nodded noncommittally and turned her back to the group. The conversation all around them had stopped. Paige sent a pleading look at Bob to continue on with whatever he was saying before.

“Open shelving. I don't need greasy fingers on the door knobs.”

“Remember that video I was showing at that party last week?” Jack asked the people at his table in a voice loud enough for the entire room to hear. “That naked screeching girl?”

“I watched that a few times this week,” someone at Jack’s table responded.
